By Bob Birge, Fairfield Patch

With four players scoring in double figures, the Fairfield Prep basketball tean closed out the regular season Monday with a 77-68 victory at Cheshire. Terry Tarpey led the way with 20 points for the Jesuits, who won their 13th straight game to improve 18-2. Tarpey got plenty of help as Tim Butala scored 17 points, freshman Tom Nolan chipped in with 14 and Mike Matera added 11.

With Hillhouse defeating Career at the buzzer on Monday, Fairfield Prep secured the No. 2 seed for the SCC tournament that begins this weekend. The Jesuits are 12th in this week's New Haven Register top 10 media state poll.

The Jesuits trailed 12-11 after the first quarter, but outscored the Rams 23-15 in the second period to open a 34-27 lead at the half. Prep then extended its advantage to 51-39 after theee periods. Nate Howard scored 15 points and Sebastian Little added 12 for Cheshire, which concluded the regular season with a 12-8 mark.

After the game, the SCC announced its playoff pairings. Fourteen teams qualified for the tournament. Hillhouse is the defending SCC champion.
