Senior Robbie Bier scored 27 points Tuesday night as the Fairfield Prep basketball team defeated Xavier of Middletown 54-48 in a Southern Connecticut Conference contest at Alumni Hall. The Jesuits, who snapped a three-game losing streak, swept the season series from the Falcons for the first time in school history. Fairfield Prep posted a 63-60 win in Middletown on Dec. 23. The Jesuits improved to 3-1 in the Quinnipiac Division and 9-3 overall while the Falcons fell to 2-2 within the division and 7-5 overall.
Seniors Matt Daley and Kevin Potter added 11 and eight points, respectively, for the Jesuits. "When we were 8-0, I think maybe there was a 'we-don't-have-to-work-as-hard' mentality," Fairfield Prep coach Leo Redgate said, "but I think they really brought it today."
Senior Michael Boornazian paced the Falcons with 27 points with Jovan Santos and Patrick Lenehan adding another 14. A first-period shootout between leading Prep scorer Bier (13 in the first) and Boornazian (11 in the first), ended in an 18-all tie leading into the second.
Boornazian hit two free throws in the final seconds of the second quarter to give the Falcons a 30-29 lead at the half. "Even if we had lost the game, I was very proud of the energy they showed, the toughness they showed and their refusal to quit because they kept bouncing back," Redgate said.
Down 42-39, Fairfield Prep outscored Xavier 15-6 in the final period to close out the win. Back-to-back steals in the final minute helped seal the victory. "They needed to protect the win," Redgate added. "They needed to finish the game as strong as we wanted to."
Fairfield Prep will head to Hamden on Friday night.
