Fairfield Prep Crew Goes to Nationals!
For the third year in a row, Prep Crew has qualified boats to go to the US Rowing Junior National Championships. This competition is held each year in the middle of June (6/11-14) in Cincinnati, Ohio to accommodate teams that come in from all sections of the country. The regional qualifier was held in Worcester, MA the weekend of May 16th. The Northeast/MidAtlantic Regionals are known as the toughest place to qualify each and every year and the competition was stiff, as expected.
While novices race at the Regionals, they are not able to qualify for Nationals. In terms of eligible races, Prep entered five boats and qualified in two of these events. This year, the ‘pair' (a two man boat with no coxswain) will be manned by Marc Ioli '09 and Bobby Wallace '11. The ‘Heavyweight 4+' (a four man boat with a coxswain) will be rowed by Brendan Doran '11, Ben Lowden '11, Peter Tortora '12 and Steven Venables '11 with John Hubert '11 on the rudder and calling out race strategy.
Having brought teams to Nationals before, Coach John Turner talked about what a great experience this will be for our rowers and how important it is to the future of the program. "We are fortunate to have the strong leadership of senior Marc Ioli who has been here before" says Turner. He added, "Wallace and Doran were at Nationals last year as freshman and the fact that we are bringing another frosh this year (Tortora) and two more sophomores (Lowden / Venables) really suggests that outlook for the next few years is very, very good. We have a strong foundation that we can build upon and in a short time we have already shown we can compete at the national level. You have to be optimistic about where we are and where we are going".
