MANCHESTER -- Forget Wheaties as the breakfast of champions. Fairfield Prep's Brad Kontra was one of the top performers at Monday's Class LL track championships after eating a breakfast of cold pizza earlier that morning. Kontra didn't credit a nutritious start to his day for his success--which included victories in both the shot put and discus events at Manchester High School--but he couldn't discount its value either. "I felt really good," Kontra said after setting new personal bests in both events. "I've had a cold for the last couple days which hasn't been good but I feel great now."
Kontra started quickly Monday, throwing 54-feet, 5-inches with his second throw of the day in the shot put, his longest effort of the outdoor season. He followed that an hour later with a heave of 147-feet, 9-inches in the discus, some eight feet beyond his previous career best.
"After winning the shot I felt really relaxed," Kontra said. "So I just went out and kind of let it fly." Kontra, who is headed to Lehigh in the fall, was a standout in the discus despite the strong wind that blew in the throwers' faces all afternoon. His technique appeared to be at its best. "I really don't know. All I know is I kept my arm back," said Kontra, who edged Danbury's Robert Guider by just six inches.
NOTE: Also from Prep, Connor Rog placed 6th in the 1600, Edgardo Soberal placed 3rd in High Jump and Kiki Dormevil placed third in Pole Vault.
