Prep collects food for the Thanksgiving 'Great Ignatian Challenge' Drive
Colleen Adams

After shattering our food drive goal last year, Fairfield Prep is once again joining fellow Jesuit high schools in the Great Ignatian Challenge to raise awareness of hunger in our communities, while filling local food banks and pantries with tens of thousands of pounds of much-needed provisions for needy families.

Prep is one of seven Jesuit schools from the extended New York metro area participating in a friendly but spirited competition, which runs from October 28 to November 25. The schools compete to see who can amass the highest number of food items per student in the month-long drive.

The greater Prep Community may donate by bringing goods to school, or by purchasing goods through our donation page on the website yougivegoods.com. Each student is requested to donate 20 items to reach our goal. (No Ramen noodles please.)

In 2018, Prep students and their families collected approximately 19,500 items, exceeding previous years' efforts. The items, once again, will be donated to three local charities: Action for Bridgeport Community Development (ABCD), The Church of the Blessed Sacrament food pantry, and Operation Hope.

About the Great Ignatian Challenge

A Jesuit school alumnus and donor, inspired by the Jesuit mission of being "Men for Others," initiated the "Challenge" by pledging tens of thousands of dollars for tuition assistance at the participating schools. The "Challenge" is intended to highlight the collective service power and generosity among the Jesuit high schools in the area.

The participating schools are Fordham Preparatory School (The Bronx); Loyola School (Manhattan); Regis High School (Manhattan), Saint Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia, PA), Saint Peter’s Prep (Jersey City, NJ); and Xavier High School (Manhattan) – are sponsored by the USA Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus (The Jesuits). Last year, the schools participating in The Great Ignatian Challenge collected and distributed over 53 tons of food.
