Workplace Shadow & Job Trek Experiences

All Seniors are invited to apply to participate in the program.  Seniors are selected to participate in the program based on the following:

• Submission of an online application,
• Completion of an in-person meeting with Mrs. Royal
• Solid grades, strong attendance and overall good standing in the school community 
• An active and up to date LinkedIn profile 

Selected seniors will be paired with a participating host company based on career interest and available opportunities*. 

*Please know that in the event we do not have enough opportunities or if the opportunities we have are not a fit for the students selected to participate in the program, those students will be notified accordingly.  

• Selected seniors will be paired with a sponsoring host company/business
• When possible, we will attempt to send a group of seniors (up to 4) to each participating host company/business
• Each shadowing/job trek experience is different (based on the host company/business) but in general students can expect to:
  • Learn about the organization, the work they perform and the industry in which they operate
  • Tour facilities
  • Observe meetings
  • Shadow and engage with employees
  • Execute specific projects (either individually or as a team)
  • In some cases, students may rotate across departments providing exposure to different career opportunities
• Unlike a traditional internship, seniors will not be given a job description or be subject to completing a specific set of job-related duties while on site
• Seniors will be required to provide their own transportation to the host company/business
• If selected, seniors and their parents will need to sign a contract confirming their attendance and commitment to the program
• The program will run during the school day so students with after school activities are still able to participate

Seniors interested in participating in Workplace Shadow Program should complete and submit their application by December 1, 2025

Application

Prep seniors who are selected to participate in the Workplace Shadow Program or Job Trek program will be partnered with participating host companies based on career interest, geographic location and overall fit.

Prep will offer host companies support in planning and will provide student details to host companies approximately 2 weeks prior to the beginning of the program.  

Selected students will spend the duration of their program (either 1 day or 3) on site at their respective host company.  They are expected to be on site from 8:30-2:30 for the duration of the program.  Students must provide their own transportation. 

This is not a traditional internship.  This is learning opportunity for students as well as an opportunity for host companies to participate in the career development of students.  It's a great way to give back while spending time with our students!  They are very energizing!!

If you are interested in hosting students for the 2026 Workplace Shadow or Job Trek Program which will take place from March 10-12, 2026, please reach out to Jennifer Royal, Assistant Director of Family and Student Engagement. 

• Coordinate a schedule for your host student(s) to provide structure to the day
• Orient your student(s) to your organization, the work you perform and the industry in which you operate
• Provide workplace/facility tours
• Invite your student(s) to observe meetings, participate in social events and shadow/engage with other employees
• When possible, consider rotations across departments providing your student(s) with exposure to a variety of jobs
• Consider having your student(s) complete a project which includes a presentation that they will have to make while onsite
• If possible, involve others in your workplace to spread the responsibility and provide your student(s) with exposure to other employees
• Attempt to provide your student(s) with access to leadership
• Consider holding a "Lunch & Learn" where key leaders in your organization can share their own stories with students
• Create downtime which will allow you the flexibility to focus on your own work priorities 
• You do not need to create a position description or specific tasks/job duties for your student(s) to perform while on site
• You are not required to provide a workstation or systems access; students will have their own iPads
