Each summer, generally about one week after the students' final exams are completed, Fairfield Prep sends a group of rising juniors to the Appalachia region of Virginia. The group, which is typically about 30 students, separates for the week with half of them serving in Barren Springs, VA and the other half serving in Fries, VA. The groups travel to Virginia in vans driven by the faculty chaperones on a Friday morning and return on the evening of the next Friday.
While on this trip, the students will hopefully gain a deeper understanding of poverty, social justice and Jesuit education. They will spend 7 days living in community with the people of the Appalachian region and each other. The bonds made among classmates on a trip like this are indescribable.
Applications for the Appalachia service trip will be made available to sophomores in early April. The cost is usually between $500.00 and $650.00. Financial assistance is available to those who qualify.
All questions related to this trip should be directed to the Director of Christian Service, Ms Stanley ext 2096.
