Securities

Contributing appreciated securities to Fairfield Prep is an ideal way to make a gift. If the security has been held for at least one year, the donor may be eligible for an income tax deduction of the full market value. In addition, the donor may avoid any capital gain tax. Please consult your tax advisor for information regarding your own personal situation.

Please contact the Advancement Office, 203-254-4237, promptly to notify us of a stock transfer so we can correctly record your donation. Our brokerage firm does not receive your name or specific instructions regarding your gift.

Your gift is considered made on the date that the securities pass unconditionally out of your control. For listed securities, the value of the gift is the mean between the high and low quotations on the date that the gift is made. Fairfield Prep normally records the gift at this value and provides acknowledgement of the receipt of the gift.

Matching Gifts

Matching gifts from corporations are a substantial and welcome way for donors to help Fairfield Prep obtain additional funds. Matching gifts, directed for the same purpose as your gift, will be counted as a contribution over and above your personal gift or pledge payment. Depending on your employer, your gift could be matched 1:1, 2:1, and sometimes 3:1.

Confirm

The Advancement Office will verify the gift and form. The form will then be returned to your company, which will then issue a matching gift contribution to Prep. If you have already sent in a gift to Prep, but forgot to complete a matching gift form, it's not too late to send it in. Simply send us your completed matching gift form along with the approximate date and amount of your gift and we'll do the rest!

Gift Planning

Bequests

One of the simplest giving options is including Prep in your will. Designating a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, a residual of your estate or a contingency amount allows you to make a high impact, legacy gift to Prep. It is recommended that a copy of the provision in your will that specifies your bequest to Fairfield Prep be forwarded to the Development Office in order to ensure that your bequest is carried out as you intended.

Real Estate
A gift of real estate may include personal residence, investment propery or undeveloped land. An outright gift of real estate held by the donor for more than 12 months provides the donor with a charitable income tax deduction for the full market value of the property, based on an independent appraisal. The deduction is limited to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income, but the remaining value of the deduction may be carried over and used for deductions for the next five years.

Personal Property
A gift of personal property may include jewelry, paintings, stamp/coin collections or antiques.

Charitable Trusts

Charitable Remainder Trust
A charitable remainder trust is an irrevocable trust which pays income to the beneficiaries designated by the donor. At the end of a specified term the remainder in the trust goes to Prep. The donor may act as trustee and make investment decisions with regard to the trust, and may increase the value of the trust at any time. The creation of a charitable remainder trust provides the donor with a charitable deduction in any year in which a transfer of property is made to the trust.

Charitable Lead Trust
If you have a large estate and are looking for ways to pass more on to your heirs, a Charitable Lead Trust may be an excellent plan for you. A Charitable Lead Trust is a gift plan that allows you to transfer assets to future generations at a significantly reduced gift or estate tax cost, while providing a stream of income to Prep for a term of years.

The main advantage of a Charitable Lead trust is that the term and payout rate of the trust can be adjusted to reduce or even “zero out” the gift tax you owe on the asset transfer to your heirs. In other words, it is possible to make a large asset transfer to your heirs tax-free, while also benefiting Prep. In addition, any appreciation that takes place inside of the trust goes tax-free to your heirs. This makes a Charitable Lead Trust a powerful wealth transfer tool.

IRA Rollovers

Charitable IRA Rollover

If you are 70 ½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to benefit the Fairfield Prep and receive tax benefits in return. You can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as Fairfield Prep without having to pay income taxes on the money.

Why Consider This Gift?

Your gift will be put to use today, allowing you to see the difference your donation is making.
You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.

If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

Life Insurance

Life insurance can make a great gift. If you are carrying more insurance coverage than your family obligations now require, you may want to consider gifting an unneeded, paid-up policy. If you transfer all rights and incidents of ownership of your policy to Prep, you will be eligible for a charitable income tax deduction equal to the policy’s cash surrender value or cost basis, whichever is less. The insurance policy must be whole life, not term insurance. The value of your gift for gift crediting purposes will be the cash surrender value of your policy on the date of transfer.

Fairfield Prep Fund

A gift to the Fairfield Prep Fund is the first and most important gift one can make.

The Fund provides crucial unrestricted operating support for Prep, from contributing to financial aid to investing in the programs and faculty that make Prep the place it is, the Fairfield Prep Fund impacts virtually every aspect of our boys’ experience. When you give to the Fairfield Prep Fund, you play a critical role in our mission.

Endowed Funds

An endowment gift to Fairfield Prep today provides a brighter picture for our future. When you make a gift to an endowed fund, you’re having both an immediate and long-term impact. Gifts to the endowment are invested, with a portion of the annual income from the investment use to address immediate needs of Fairfield Prep. The remaining funds are reinvested to ensure indefinite support.

Scholarship & Financial Aid

Need-Based Financial Aid: Our Financial Aid Office strives to accurately assess financial need and to equitably distribute grants to those families who demonstrate such need. For the 2024-2025 school year, Fairfield Prep awarded $3.8 million in need-based financial aid, and the average award offset tuition by 52%.

Merit Scholarships: Magis Scholarships are funded annually through the generosity of passionate and loyal Fairfield Prep Alumni. The class of 2028 was awarded $400,000 in Merit Scholarships over their four years at Prep! These awards were established by our graduates to insure that future Prep men embrace the same excellence and passion for the Jesuit mission and education of the whole person that has been the hallmark of our school since the founding in 1942. Recipients of the Magis Scholarships receive an annual grant that is renewable provided students maintain Cum Laude status and an impeccable standard of good citizenship and commitment to the Fairfield Prep mission.
