Academic Support

Director of Diversity & Academic Support Services Mr. Ruben Goodwin interfaces with the Guidance Department to support students who may periodically find themselves struggling academically. Mr. Goodwin provides services in the academic center which enables students to work on time management, organization, and study strategies. In addition, students can also request a National Honor Society Peer Tutor who will assist them in improving in a specific subject. Students may also request a university intern who will work with them more intensely to help them improve their overall executive functioning skills. Prior to midterm and final exams exam study skills sessions will be offered through the academic center.

SEED Brothers for Others Mentor Program

SEED underclassmen are assigned a big brother (member of the NHS) who assist with social and academic retention. Students are encouraged to interact once a week in an effort to promote camaraderie among each other. A pizza social is held three times during the academic year (Fall, Winter, and Spring) where students are encouraged to share their experiences at Prep in an open forum.

Academic Interns

Fairfield University interns are assigned to students who show promise but need assistance with executive functioning skills. Academic Center interns meet with students at least once a week to help them schedule tasks, discuss upcoming assignments and talk through issues they might be having in the classroom. Currently we have 3 interns (graduate and undergraduate) assigned to 30 students.

SEED Monday Meetings

SEED students are provided time each week to work on assignments and meet with Mr. Goodwin to have holistic discussions that include academics, social experiences and planning for future endeavors. SEED students will also hear from guest speakers including faculty, alumni of the program, college scholarship opportunities (Jr. ROTC Scholarship) and much more.

NHS Peer Tutor Program

If students are deficient in any subject they have the opportunity to be paired with an upperclassman who will meet with them 2-3 times per cycle. Meetings are held with our NHS tutors in the academic center each quarter so they can provide Mr. Goodwin updates on their progress. Each tutor filled out a questionnaire that enables me to create better matches with students who need help. Tutors or their parents are also asked to fill out a questionnaire so we can better understand their needs and match them appropriately.

Faculty Committee On Diversity (FCOD)

Through the Faculty Committee on Diversity teachers are assigned as mentors to students who are struggling academically. Faculty members meet with students each week to help them advance their study habits and to help students navigate through their academic journeys.

Midterm/Final Exam Study Groups

Will be held in December and June to help students prepare for their exams. Faculty and NHS members will help students create study guides, review topics they might have missed and answer questions about material they do not understand. Faculty members and National Honor Society will work in partnership to assist students. Announcements will be sent via Prep in a Minute for signups for each Exam Study Day.
