New 8-Man Crew Boat Christened
On a cold and blustery 2nd day of Spring, the Prep Crew team christened its newest shell, Pedro Arrupe, S.J., with a blessing from Fr. Paul Holland, S.J. The new 8 man boat is the third to carry a notable Jesuit’s name onto the water; two other 8’s name Segundo Montes, S.J., and Joseph O’Callahan, S.J. share the role of carrying the men of Prep down the race course. Montes, a Jesuit priest killed by the military junta in El Salvador in 1989 and O’Callahan, the first and only Jesuit to receive the medal of honor for actions in World War II, serve to remind the athletes of their foundation in the ideals of living and rowing as Men for Others.
In his blessing, Fr. Holland urged the rowers to remember their new 8’s namesake and “Let our student athletes on the water and on the land, always set a good example, as urged by Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J., the patron of this boat, that they be men for and with others…”
The team is getting ready for its first race of the season on April 7 in Philadelphia. Come support the team on April 25 as they race Xavier High School on the home course in Shelton for the 9th Annual Founder’s Cup. See the Prep website for details.
