Fairfield Prep rallies past Wilbur Cross in SCC semis

By Pat Pickens, February 26, 2013, CT Post

EAST HAVEN -- Fairfield Prep boys basketball coach Leo Redgate left three of his starters-- and three of his top four scorers -- on the bench for nearly seven minutes of the Jesuits SCC tournament semifinal against Wilbur Cross. It was a decision that left the SCC's second-seeded team down by 16 after one quarter.

Yet, that was still not enough to sink the resilient Jesuits. Prep unleashed a furious rally, coming from way behind to beat the No. 3 Governors 68-59 on Monday night at East Haven High School. "I believe in the entire team, not individuals on the team," Redgate said. "From top to bottom, I'm proud of all of them."

The Jesuits advance to Tuesday's SCC championship to take on top-seeded Hillhouse at 7 p.m. at Hamden's TD Bank Sports Center (CPTV Sports). Prep has never won the conference title, having lost its only other championship game appearance in 1995.

Fairfield Prep and Hillhouse (21-2) are currently No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the state poll. They split their regular season games, each winning on the road. Hillhouse defeated ND-West Haven 63-49 in Monday's second semifinal. "If they get the championship, they get the championship," Redgate said, referencing the Academics. "If we get it, it'll be pretty cool."

Ryan Murphy led Prep with 25 points and five rebounds, while Paschal Chukwu scored eight, blocking 10 shots and grabbing 11 rebounds as Prep improved to 21-1. "The points and rebounds helped us to win," Murphy said.

The Jesuits outscored Wilbur Cross 46-27 after halftime and Prep's bench outscored the Governors' 54-11. Thomas Nolan and Murphy combined for 26 second-half points, including 19 in the fourth, as Prep outscored Cross 26-14 in the final frame. "(Redgate) knew what he was doing," Murphy said.

Wilbur Cross guard Joshua Fleming led all scorers with 33 points -- 11 of which came on the Governors' 15-0 game-opening run with Chukwu, Murphy and Thomas Nolan on the bench. Redgate sat his junior center and underclassmen guards for three seniors -- Chris Kelly, Quinn Lincoln and Rich Sekerak.

"I feel bad for our seniors, because they're on a very good team, and they'd start for a lot of other teams," Redgate said. "I thought that, win or lose, the first quarter was going to be theirs, because they deserved it." Once Chukwu, Murphy and Nolan entered, they struggled to find a rhythm. Prep shot 0-for-15 in the first quarter, and the Governors led 17-1 after one.

"I don't know why they sat their starters, and I'm not concerned with why they did," Wilbur Cross coach Kevin Walton said. "I just knew that they're a good team, and they were going to come back. And they did." Murphy canned Prep's first field goal at 7:19 of the second, which sparked a 7-0 Prep run. After Cross built its advantage back to 26-11 the Jesuits closed the quarter with an 11-6 spurt to close the half behind 32-22. "We had to attack the rim and cut it to 10 at half," Murphy said. "We had it in our head that we were going to win the game."

Prep then scored the third quarter's first eight points, getting to within 32-30. The Jesuits cut that advantage to one, 43-42 after Chukwu's layup with 7.9 remaining, but the Governors led 45-42 after three. "They're as good as advertised," Walton said. "We weren't shocked that they came back."
