BRIDGEPORT -- It would've been perfectly understandable if Fairfield Prep took it easy Friday night against Hamden. Sure the game was played under the bright lights of the Webster Bank Arena, but the Jesuits were coming off an impressive road win against Career last Tuesday and welcome top-ranked Hillhouse to Alumni Hall this coming Tuesday.
Prep suffered no such letdown. Paschal Chukwu made sure of it, posting an impressive triple-double in the Jesuits' easy 69-34 win. Chukwu finished with 10 points, 15 rebounds and 13 blocks -- achieving the feat with a minute left in the third quarter. "Coming into this game coach told us to focus on our play and that's what we did," the junior 7-footer said.
Prep (9-0) broke this one open with a 21-0 run between the first and second quarters, powered by guards Ryan Murphy, Tommy Nolan and Rich Zielinski. The spurt put the Jesuits ahead 29-3 with 4:10 left in the second quarter, all but settling it. Murphy, a freshman, led all scorers with 19. "That was the punch," Fairfield Prep coach Leo Redgate said. "You have to make sure from there you don't let them back in the game and we did a good job with that."
The Jesuits kept the Green Dragons at bay the rest of the way, with Chukwu blocking just about every shot from inside the paint. Richard Kennedy led the Green Dragons with nine points. Hamden came into Friday's game with only two wins, but one came the night before against New London which had spent part of the season in the Top 10 of the state poll.
"Not in our league, you can't look ahead," Redgate said. "If you take a team lightly, it'll come back to bite you. I don't worry about who we're playing, I worry about how we're playing." Now Prep turns its full attention to Tuesday's showdown with fellow undefeated Hillhouse. "Hillhouse is a good team and we're a good team, too," Chukwu said.
