David Maloof II '13 awarded prestigious Pax Christi N.Y. Eileen Egan Peacemaker Award

David L. Maloof II, Class of 2013, has been awarded the Eileen Egan Peacemaker Award from Pax Christi New York for his work in helping to create a basketball facility at a Palestinian Christian refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon.

David worked for several years to create a basketball court and add a ping pong table to the refugee camp, whose previous recreational facilities for teens consisted only of a dirt soccer field. He also ran a basketball clinic this past summer for the children at the camp. A Darien News article highlights his work.

Pax Christi (Latin for “the peace of Christ”) is the global Catholic peace movement, with branches in more than fifty countries.

The Eileen Egan Peacemaker Award is presented to a person or organization whose peacemaking efforts have reached people through teaching peace, making peace, and being peace, as inspired by faith. It is named after Eileen Egan, a co-founder of Pax-Christi USA. Eileen was a journalist whose 40 years of work for Catholic Relief Services took her around the world and exposed her to many forms of violence in war and poverty, hunger and disease. Eileen’s influence extended to the United Nations, as well, where she saw to it that the right to conscientious objection was added to their statuses. Eileen received PCMNY’s Peacemaker Award in 1992. Eileen traveled widely with Dorothy Day, worked with Mother Teresa and marched with Martin Luther King, Jr.

Pax Christi Peacemaker Awards are extremely prestigious. Nationally-renowned prior winners of Pax Christi Peacemaker Awards have included:

  • the actor Martin Sheen
  • the late anti-war activist priest Father Daniel Berrigan
  • the celebrated Jesuit priest author and peace activist, John Dear, S.J., who has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize
  • Sister Helen Prejean, perhaps America’s leading advocate for the abolition of the death penalty

David, along with the other winners, will be presented with their awards at a formal ceremony in the Spring.

Nick Hilton - Fairfield Prep

While other kids were playing soccer, Fairfield Prep’s Nick Hilton was peering into a microscope, amassing rock collections, and competing in Lego League competitions. “The exact field of my interest varied depending on my age,” he recalls. “My interest in biology was a combination of my interest in science and getting my hands on every book I could read. The Peddie Summer Science Institute further drew my focus to biology and genetics through their genetics-centered lab activities.”

He is excited about his summer internship at Yale–New Haven Hospital that provided hands-on experience in biology. Under the eye of Dr. Michael Paidas, codirector of Yale Women and Children’s Center for Blood Disorders, Nick observed ultrasound evaluations of obstetric and gynecologic patients, as well as current clinical research projects. In the lab, he learned tissue culture techniques, molecular biologic techniques, and immunoassay.

Last summer Nick worked at the New York Botanical Gardens studying glutamate receptors, which deal with signaling in the human brain. He explains, “A chemical called BMAA has been found to disrupt the function of glutamate receptors and lead to diseases similar to Alzheimer’s when ingested by humans.” Nick practiced his lab skills in a state-of-the-art-facility. “My time was directed towards real-world problems, and I was supervised by very distinguished scientific staff and technicians,” he says. The internship also provided weekly lectures with researchers from a variety of specialties.

Nick wants to become a geneticist who employs techniques like gene substitution to treat diseases. “An example would be employing viruses to deliver functioning DNA sequences to pancreas cells in someone with diabetes. I would love to be on the cutting edge of such technology, because the science of genetics has the potential to cure diseases previously thought incurable,” he says.
