Foreign Language

About the Department

Within the parameters of a Jesuit education, the Fairfield Prep Foreign Language Department seeks to instill in our students a love and respect for a foreign culture by the best means possible: teaching our young men a foreign language.

Levels of Study

Four levels of study in each language are conducted. Some students may continue study in their senior year with level five, a college course taken at Fairfield University (if offered). (A “level” corresponds to a year of study here at Prep; a Prep level may or may not be equivalent to a level of study in another school). The Spanish Program has a variation of Basic Spanish which is called Proficiency Spanish (both are level one); its purpose is to meet the needs of students who come to Prep already having begun study in their language of choice, but who do not place into Intermediate Spanish (level two).

Placement Testing

Recognizing that a student may come to Fairfield Prep having already begun studies in his language of choice, the Foreign Language Department conducts a placement test in the spring for incoming freshmen. This test is not a factor in the student’s admission to Prep; only students who have already been accepted may take this test. All students who have had any prior instruction in French, Latin or Spanish are required to take the placement test. The results of the test are then combined with the information provided on a questionnaire, completed by the student and his parents, to place the student in the appropriate level.
